Gardening was an important part of the daily duties within several religious orders in Europe during Middle Ages. The rule Saint Benedict specified that monastery should, if possible, contain a garden itself, and before above all things, special care should be taken sick, so they may served very deed, as Christ himself. cultivation medicinal utility plants to meet material needs monastic institutions, but no physical has yet been found excavated either Scandinavia or Iceland. Cistercians were particularly well known for being pioneer gardeners, other like Benedictines Augustinians also practised gardening. monasteries nunneries operating Iceland medieval times are assumed have belonged Augustinian Benedictine orders. In Norway, some Dominicans, Fransiscans, Premonstratensians Knights Hospitallers. Based on botanical investigations at Icelandic Norwegian sites, it is concluded many past and, with evidence combined, most probably cultivated gardens.
